Who is Loki?
So, before getting into the Loki cartoon, we should obviously know a little bit more about his character. So, who is Loki? In the Marvel Universe, Loki is a fictional character created by Stan Lee, Larry Lieber, and Jack Kirby. Brought up as an Asgardian prince by Odin and Frigga, Loki felt inferior to and lesser than his older brother Thor. (All of these characters are taken from Norse Mythology).
Growing up, Thor had been lauded for his manliness, aggression, and pride. His ability to be unflinchingly proud of his strength and skills made him the better son in Odin’s eyes. As he was the eldest, he was also in line for the throne after Odin.
Because of Thor’s visible strength, he was also favored by the common people of Asgard. Loki, however, was different than the rest. He was small and not as strong, but he made up for it by being a skilled sorcerer. (He used to make mischief with his sorcery skills, which led to him being called “God of Mischief”).
Loki is actually not Odin’s biological son. In his battles with the frost giants of Jotunheim, specifically against their leader Laufey, Odin found Laufey’s son after the battle of Jotunheim had been over. Taking pity on the child, he brought the child home and raised him as his own.
He has always been known to cause mischief, and in the MCU or Marvel Cinematic Universe, Loki has tried multiple times to sabotage his brother Thor, usurp the Asgardian throne, and most importantly, wreaked havoc on Earth by bringing the Chitauri army. Luckily, the Avengers were there to save the day.
More about Loki’s Character
Loki’s character is termed as an “antihero” character. He is not a protagonist nor an antagonist as his character does not allow such black and white labels to be put on him.
We see the revengeful side of Loki, the vulnerable and betrayed side of Loki when Odin reveals his true parentage, the abandoned side of him when he was never chosen first by his father, never given the first preference, the humane side of him when he shows just the tiniest bit of emotions in front of Thor, making us realize that he just wanted his brother to understand what he was going through, and be by his side.
Lastly, we see the saddest version of him when Frigga, his mother, whom he loved the most, dies. So, Loki is a very complex character with an unstable moral compass and values. He has done many bad things, but he is also a character who has been through equally bad things. So, now aren’t you eager to know more about this character? Well, then it’s time you hang in there and read on!
